Emmerdale star saved dog from drowning - Daily TV round-up

'Emmerdale' star James Thornton is said to be 'lucky to be alive' after he saved his dog by jumping into a river.

The Jack Russell called Daisy belongs to the actor and his wife, ‘Gavin and Stacey’ actress Joanna Page, and had jumped into the River Aire in Leeds without warning while the pair were out jogging last month.

Thornton, who plays John Barton in the soap, jumped in after the dog, but then found himself overwhelmed by the current.

“I wasn’t scared when I jumped in, but once I hit the water and realised I couldn’t swim back against the current I was worried about what I’d done. There had been torrential rain and the river was moving fast.

“Once I caught up with Daisy I just had to let us be carried along and when we got to some banking I managed to get to the side and scramble out.”

The actor, who announced he's quitting the show next year, was taken to hospital after swallowing dirty water in the river and suffering severe mouth ulcers. He also damaged his eye.

The Royal Variety Performance was dogged with technical problems during its filming this week. The show reportedly took four hours to get through, with Peter Kay having to take to the stage to fill in gaps, and other stars including Barry Manilow having to perform his act twice. BBC sitcom 'Outnumbered' will not return for another series next year because bosses fear that its child stars are getting too old. Tyger Drew-Honey, who plays Jake, said that there will be Christmas specials, and a Comic Relief special, but that there won't be a full series. “The year after that there could be another series,” he said. “I think they don't want to dive in this year and do a whole series because it might not work with the kids getting older.” [The Sun]

HMV has said it's sorry about the gaffe which saw Amelia Lily announced as the 'X Factor' winner on its website, allowing fans to pre-order her single. “Hmv.com was looking to accept customer pre-orders for versions of the X Factor winner's single recorded by each of the three finalists,” said a spokesperson. “Due to a technical issue, only Amelia Lily's details were uploaded. This has been the result of an unforeseen but regrettable technical issue, for which we apologise and ask that nothing further be construed.” [BBC]
