“It’s totally my fault,” he said. “So, I get very breathless, which is a pain in the backside. Trying to get upstairs, oh God, it’s ridiculous.

“Of course, when you’re bloody nearly 80 it’s depressing because you’ve had it anyway. I haven’t even got the strength to garden any more.”

79-year-old Briers, who played Tom Good in the classic sitcom, gave up smoking 10 years ago.

“The ciggies got me. I stopped ten years ago, but too late,” he added. “If you do it in your 30s, you’re OK, but after 30 it gets you.

“I was diagnosed five years ago and didn’t think it would go quite as badly as it has. It’s a b****r, but there it is. I used to love smoking.”

I saw one poster during a marathon saying ‘One life, live it’ so that is what I’m trying to do. I think I can get elected. People will grumble and say ‘Oh you were interesting but now you are boring’ but I will try and do it with a good heart.” [The Sun]

Stephen Merchant has defended Ricky Gervais over criticism of his new sitcom 'Derek'. “I feel like the knives are out for Ricky whatever he does,” he said. “It's happened to every successful performer in this country. Stephen Fry was targeted a while back - he was much loved in the days of Fry & Laurie, then he became 'Mr Know-It-All' and now he's a national treasure. It seems to be standard practice.” [ShortList]
