The Fried Chicken Shop: Life In A Day (Tue, 9pm, C4)
The title of this ‘Cutting Edge’ film does not refer to the lifespan of the unfortunate chicken between hatching and being served up with fries, but is in fact a reference to the “all human life is contained within” staff and customers at Roosters Spot on Clapham High Street. And by “all human life is contained within” I don’t mean that there are humans in the chicken nuggets: that would be crazy and definitely, definitely never happens. I mean that the shop serves as not only a local employer but a bit of a meeting place and focal point for all sorts of folks in the neighbourhood. Youngsters Anila and Waqar serve fried chicken in long shifts, where they’ll sometimes have 1,000 customers a day on a weekend, thanks to the nearby presence of the area’s biggest nightclub. Stars of the show include loud and giggly regulars Tina and Monique, and it’s all a chaotic, noisy, and sometimes sweet slice (leg?) of modern British life.
