'EastEnders's Phil Mitchell is to end up in a coma following a spectacular car crash on the show, featuring a stunt set to cost a reported £1 million.

Phil will be thrown through the windscreen of a car after hitting a lorry while on the way to do a 'dodgy deal' with new character Carl White.

He will be left fighting for his life, while he is airlifted to hospital, with footage also reportedly being filmed from the air.

It emerged earlier this week that Barbara Windsor was set to make a one-off return to the show, with her character Peggy Mitchell to return from Portugal to be by Phil's bedside.

A source on the show told The Sun: “This is going to be the most dramatic and the most expensive stunt in EastEnders’ history.

“No expense has been spared and show bosses are determined to make sure it is the most talked about TV moment of the year.

“Carl gets distracted from the road and swerves into the path of a lorry, resulting in a huge smash. Phil flies through the windscreen on to the road, leaving him with terrible injuries.

“A rescue helicopter airlifts him to hospital, filming all the while. He ends up in a coma, on life support, fighting for his life.

“Peggy then comes back to see Phil in hospital for a one-off special appearance.”

It's thought that the dramatic storyline has been worked in to lift the show's failing ratings.
