Neighbours searches for new singer for its theme tune

Aussie soap wants 'Ashes-style' contest between the UK and Australia

Channel 5 is launching an 'Ashes-style' competition to find a new singer for the theme tune to 'Neighbours'.

Viewers of the iconic Aussie soap are being asked to record and upload their efforts singing the show's new theme.

Five finalists from the UK will be shortlisted, with a winner then going head-to-head with the finalist from Australia to find the winner, who will then become the voice of a 'remixed' version of the theme which will appear on the opening credits around the world from April.

“We’ve beaten the Aussies in the last two cricket meetings, so I’m confident a UK soloist can be crowned the voice of the new 'Neighbours' theme,” said C5 commissioning editor Greg Barnett.

Each of the five final vocalists will have their effort played over the show's opening credits during the week of March 18, with viewers voting for which is the best.

The winner then heads to Melbourne for the sing-off.

The show has long had a connection with singers, with the likes of former stars Jason Donovan, Kylie Minogue, Holly Valance, Natalie Imbruglia, Stefan Dennis and Delta Goodrem all having taken on pop careers.
