Massive audience watch Becky's farewell in Coronation Street

'Coronation Street' has scored its biggest audience in almost a year, after 11.5 million viewers tuned in to see Becky McDonald depart the cobbles.

'Corrie' fans saw Becky leave last night after ruining ex-husband Steve McDonald's latest marriage, just hours after he had walked down the aisle.

Becky waited until the wedding party in the Rovers to present Steve with a copy of Tracy's medical records, which proved that his fourth wife had lied to him about her recent miscarriage.

An emotional - yet triumphant - Becky then headed to the airport where she dismissed a remorseful Steve and jetted off - in first class no less - for a new life in the sun with her new man. Who told her he loved her after dating for about five minutes!

Ignoring that premature declaration of love, it was a brilliant departure for Becky McDonald who has been hailed by the show's creator Tony Warren as the 'archetypal 'Corrie' woman'.

We have to admit that, although we initially loved the character when she first rocked up in Weatherfield's knicker factory, our interest had started to wane over the past year with the saga of her nephew Max ("Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaax!") and the endless attempts to win back Steve.

However, the build-up to the exit storyline has seen Becky regain her inner feistiness and get her life back on track, making amends with sister Kylie and proving that the pair are a force to be reckoned with as they set out to expose Tracy Barlow's lies.

Last night's double-bill had plenty of humour as Becky toyed with Steve and Tracy as they attempted to make their wedding vows, and it was refreshing to see a happy exit for one of the show's ballsiest characters in recent years.

Actress Katherine Kelly, who played Becky, has already landed a stage role with the National Theatre and after last night's performance (and massive ratings) we're tipping her to follow the likes of Sarah Lancashire and Suranne Jones as 'Corrie's next big break-out star.
