Comedian Frank Carson died virtually penniless, according to reports.

The veteran of Saturday night TV in the 80s, who was working right up to his death aged 85 last year, left an estate of just £8,013.

But after legal costs, expenses and debts were paid off, the figure of the estate was valued as nil.

Probate documents showed that he had wanted to leave two homes, one each to his son and daughter, but had been unable to.

He did, however, still have a remaining property in Spain, but what will happen to that will be dealt with by Spanish law.

Carson, known for his quick delivery and catchphrase 'it's a cracker', died from stomach cancer last February.

He grew up the son of a binman in north Belfast, and had been playing pubs and clubs since he left the army in the 1950s.

Later, he achieved widespread fame after he won the TV talent show 'Opportunity Knocks'.

He was also a committed charity worker, raising £130,000 for the children's cancer ward at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Carson was made a Knight of St Gregory by Pope John Paul II in 1987 for his efforts. [Daily Mail]
