Doctor Who: Peter Capaldi is the new Doctor

The BBC reveals the twelfth Doctor to be Peter Capaldi

The new star of Doctor Who has finally been unveiled during a live one-off special… and it's none other than Peter Capaldi.

After weeks of speculation, 'Doctor Who' fans can finally stop wondering who will take over from the wonderful Matt Smith… as the Twelfth Doctor has finally been revealed. In a one-off special live from the BBC, Peter Capaldi has been confirmed as the Twelfth incarnation of our favourite Time Lord. And after all the secrecy, it's marvellous to get our first glimpse of the brand new Doctor.

Revealed during a live show featuring current Doctor Matt Smith as well as series favourite Bernard Cribbins and even Fifth Doctor Peter Davison, Peter Capaldi has been welcomed onto the TARDIS with open arms… and it's about time.

"It's so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer," he explains. "But it has been absolutely fantastic - so many wonderful things have happened. For a while I couldn't tell my daughter who would be looking on the internet and saying 'so and so should be Doctor Who'… and she was getting rather upset that they never mentioned me."

Speaking of his audition, it looks as though Peter might have nailed it from the off… and as a Doctor Who fan himself, it's obvious he knew exactly what he was doing.

"It was quite hard - even though I'm a lifelong Doctor Who fan, I haven't really played the Doctor since I was nine so… as an adult actor I've never worked on it. I downloaded some old scripts and practiced those in front of the mirror, but Stephen had already written some scenes that referred to a Doctor of my ilk."

"I'm surprised to look in the mirror and see Doctor Who looking back," he added. "He's not me yet, but he's reaching out… and hopefully we'll get it together."

"Doctor Who belongs to all of us," he said. "Everyone made Doctor Who."

Of course, with a new Doctor arriving, the old one has to move on… and talking about his time on Doctor Who, it looks as though Matt Smith has nothing but love for the role that made him a household name… but it seems he's happy to hand over the baton.

"I've loved it," said Matt Smith. "I really have and I'll miss it but… when you've gotta go, you've gotta go."

"I'll miss playing a character that can bounce from A - Z like that and be the smartest in the room and the silliest in the room… just being the Doctor. He's the Doctor, you know? What a character. There are no parts like this"

"I'm excited," he added. "Because I know what's coming. He's going to have a blast."

Of course, secrecy has been paramount since the new Doctor was officially cast. Sources close to the show revealed that only 10 people knew who the new Doctor would be… and they used the codename 'Whodini' to keep everything hush hush. Even plans for the live show were kept tightly under wraps, with a repeat of 'Celebrity Mastermind' listed in its place. According to The Daily Mirror, Peter was even snuck into the studio in disguise in order to ensure his identity was kept top secret.

But now that veil of secrecy has been lifted and the new Doctor is out in the open. But what do you think of Peter Capaldi? Will he make a good Twelfth Doctor? With his first official appearance in this year's Christmas special, it looks as though we won't have to wait long to find out.

Ryan Leston is a sci-fi geek from Cardiff who loves Doctor Who… and even owns his own scarf. His favourite Doctor was David Tennant and he'd love to see John Barrowman back on the TARDIS. Follow Ryan Leston on Twitter or Facebook.
