Coronation Street Opens Door As Wedding Venue As First Ever Couple Get Married In The Rovers
Paul Johnston and Andy Daniel said their 'I dos' in Weatherfield
We've seen one or two people tie the knot on the cobbles over the years.
But now Coronation Street has opened its doors as a real wedding venue, playing host to its first ever ceremony this weekend.
Yahoo's former Head of Entertainment, Paul Johnston, 33, and long-term partner Andy Daniel, 37, said their 'I dos' behind the bar at the Rovers Return, much to the delight of their friends and family.
Making history, they became the first ever couple to start married life by drinking champagne in Weatherfield.
And it looked like they did some serious celebrating with LOTS of corks being popped.
We're sure Bet Lynch would approve.
Corrie fan Paul inquired about the possibility of holding their wedding on the set after he heard that it had been turned into a visitor attraction.
Tour operator Continuum clearly thought it was a marvellous idea, so decided to apply for a marriage licence back in June.
Paul told The Manchester Evening News: "My background is in TV journalism so I’ve written about plenty of soap weddings, so it seemed entirely apt to have one of my own - although we were hoping there wasn’t quite as much drama involved at ours than in the soaps!"
He added: "We’re both big fans of the show and I think anyone born or living in the UK knows Coronation Street, which makes it such an iconic venue.
"We wanted to do something totally different for our wedding, and you can’t get much better than marrying in the nation’s most famous pub."
Many couples get their wedding day inspiration from the likes of Kate Middleton and Prince William or Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
"I absolutely loved the wedding of Karen and Steve McDonald, where Tracy Barlow arrives, reveals she’s pregnant, and it all kicked off with a stiletto," said Paul.
Andy added: "Mine would be when Becky McDonald got too drunk to get married - but we’re not planning that to happen today!"
The Corrie fans, who live in Islington and have been together for 12 years, had an exclusive tour of the set after tying the knot, getting the opportunity to take their snaps in the Platts' front room and at the famous bus stop.
That's going to be one memorable wedding album.
