Coronation Street cobbles to be listed? – Daily TV round-up

The ‘Coronation Street’ set is to be listed, according to reports.

The famous cobbles of the 51-year-old outdoor set are currently going through the application process to become a place of historic interest.

A source at English Heritage told The Mirror that 'there’s a really good chance it will be granted listed status in April. It’s a truly iconic place that millions have grown up with, and a lot of historic TV moments have happened there'.

“It would be perfect sense to turn it into a tourist attraction,” the source added.

The studio was originally open to the public for tours until 1999 and more than half a million fans turned up each year. However, the tours stopped due to the show’s hectic filming schedule when extra episodes were added.

The set has been under threat since ITV announced it is moving its studios to another site in Salford.

If the current site becomes listed, it would be safe from development. [The Mirror]
