Will comic book villain Negan be in Walking Dead season 5?

If you though The Governor was bad, wait till you meet Negan...

'The Walking Dead' characters that we know and love are in a right pickle as we left them at the end of season four. However, things could be about to get far worse if a certain character from the comics makes an appearance in season five of the TV show. Robert Kirkman has been talking about the possibility of seeing the devilish villain Negan and when to expect him to make the leap from comic to TV.

For those who wish to know nothing about season five or any of the events that take place in the comics, this is good time to look away as there will potentially be spoilers throughout. Negan is a hell of a nasty piece of work in the comics and his arrival on the scene is guaranteed to send shock waves through the group and will likely spell the demise of at least one much beloved character.

Casting Jon Hamm

As yet, no one has been cast as Negan in the TV show. However, MTV put it to comic creator Robert Kirkman that Jon Hamm of 'Mad Men' fame would be perfect for the part. Kirkman responded that 'he's not tall enough! That's a joke. I think Jon Hamm would be perfect. I think after 'Mad Men' has run, Jon Hamm is going to have a Tom Hanks level film career, so I don't think he'll be coming back to television anytime soon. Although that would be cool!' I guess that means we can't rule out seeing Jon Hamm as Negan but perhaps Kirkman is on to something here as Hamm will likely be enjoying the freedom of not being committed to one TV show when he is finished with 'Mad Men'. It would certainly be very interesting to see an actor of his calibre taking on such a dark role.

Other candidates

Fans have been speculating forever about who should play Negan when he is finally cast in the TV show. According to comic artist Charlie Adler, Negan is based on Henry Rollins so this would make him the perfect man for the role but there are many other options being considered by Kirkman and showrunner Scott Gimple. Kirkman told MTV that 'as far as Negan casting goes, Scott and I are always talking about who we would put in that, it's definitely on our minds, and there are definitely a lot of candidates.' Bryan Cranston anybody?

When will Negan show up?

The really big question for any 'Walking Dead' fans who can't wait to see this baseball wielding psychopath on screen is just when will he make it into the TV show? Season five will have to deal with the ominous community at Terminus first before likely moving into new territory for the second half of the season. Kirkman says 'I wouldn't expect Negan too terribly soon, although he is definitely in the plan. It's a 99% lock that he's going to be in the show eventually, so be on the lookout for that.' That tells us very little except that there might yet be some way to go before the introduction of Negan. With The Governor well and truly out of the picture, will the Terminus group make big enough baddies to sustain interest or will 'The Walking Dead' need to bring out Negan to really spice things up in season five?
