90s sitcom 'Birds Of A Feather' is to return to our screens – but on ITV rather than on its original home on the BBC.

Original stars Pauline Quirke, Linda Robson and Lesley Joseph are to reprise their roles for an eight-episode run.

Writers Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran reportedly took the idea to the Beeb, but it only wanted to make a one-off Christmas special.

Instead ITV has now snapped up the show, which regularly pulled in 20 million viewers.

An ITV source told The Sun: “The idea has been kicking around for a while and all the cast were up for it. Top brass heard that the writers had only been offered a one-off special at the BBC, so they decided to strike.

“The scripts are great and still crackling with the kind of gags that made it such a big success all those years ago.

“It’s all very hush-hush right now but ITV are delighted that they’ve managed to land it.”

The threesome have been successfully touring the show in theatres for the last year.

The show originally began in 1989 and ran for 102 episodes over nine series.

It centred on Tracey (Robson) and Sharon (Quirke), the wives of armed robbers serving time in prison who lived together in Chigwell.

Veteran comedian Barry Cryer has slammed the state of sitcoms, saying that the standard has 'gone back 30 years'. “We're living in an era of back-to-basics sitcoms and it's no laughing matter,” he said, taking particular issue with Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Derek Jacobi's show 'Vicious'. “It was insult, insult, insult every other line. You don't believe in them. You don't like them, for a start. It was positively homophobic. It made John Inman look restrained.” [Radio Times]
