The Big Bang Theory team with LucasFilm to celebrate Star Wars day

Bob Newhart will also appear in the episode as a famous character from the franchise

'The Big Bang Theory' will celebrate 'Star Wars' day with an episode dedicated entirely to George Lucas' intergalactic epic.

The Hollywood Reporter have confirmed that 'The Proton Transmogrification' will revolve around the gang honouring the annual nerdy extravaganza, while Bob Newhart's Professor Proton is set to appear before Sheldon in a vision too

Lucasfilm assisted 'The Big Bang Theory' by helping them re-create Dagobah, which is where Yoda lived in exile surrounded by swamps and forest. They provided various props to aid the show, including a light saber, and experts from the company also consulted on the instalment, while final touches to the production were overseen at Lucasfilm's San Francisco headquarters.

Chuck Lorre, 'The Big Bang Theory's' co-creator, told the website, "We were approached by the Lucasfilm people to do something to celebrate 'Star Wars' Day, which was nice."

Steve Molaro, the sitcom's showrunner, added, "We knew that Bob was coming back and Lucasfilm called us, and we realised that this might be an opportunity to mix both stories and come up with something special."

'The Big Bang Theory' came up with the idea to feature Dagobah though, with Molaro explaining, "This was all from us. They're excited about everything we're doing, and they're going to help us with the special effects. Bob is going to be swinging a light saber around and they sent us a real one to use. They're going to help make it look and sound right. It's an amazing crossover for us."

Both Molaro and Lorre also admitted that Newhart will play a character from the 'Star Wars' mythology, but refused to reveal which one, while Newhart conceded that he didn't actually know too much about the franchise so he had to "do some research."

'The Big Bang Theory's' 'Star Wars' themed episode will be aired in US on May 1, before it is finally broadcast in the UK later in the year.

To the uninitiated, 'Star Wars' day is an unofficial holiday celebrated by fans of the series. They picked the date because the infamous line, "May the force be with you," sounds just like "May the fourth."

Gregory Wakeman is a Big Bang Theory buff whose favourite character is Sheldon Cooper (obvz) but who also has a soft spot for Stuart too. The loveable loser.
