Sheridan Smith is a woman of many parts: she can currently or shortly be seen as the wife of Ronnie Biggs in an ITV1 biopic; as a woman under attack from a deranged sniper in movie ‘Tower Block’; in an uproarious costume drama with Rupert Everett and Maggie Gyllenhaal about the invention of the vibrator; in the West End as the titular star of Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler (regarded as one of the great roles in theatre) and now here in an adaptation of a Daphne Du Maurier story. ‘The Scapegoat’ tells the tale of a decent schoolteacher who meets his doppelganger, a feckless upper class cad. Both parts are played by Matthew Rhys, and before you can say “unlikely plot device”, the earnest fellow finds himself living the life of his raffish double, stately home and troubled marriage to sexy wife Sheridan Smith and all. Silly stuff really, but Smith and Rhys are excellent, and the period flavour of the 1950s, especially Smith’s outfits, is a treat. less
