Jamie Oliver’s new three-part cooking show finds the self-made millionaire who tells it like it is and sticks it to The Man with his food crusades (or annoyingly ubiquitous self-publicist who keeps cashing in on his cooking-for-dummies act), showing viewers how to create perfect summer grub. By this stage in his career, you’re either an Oliver lover who’ll be tuning in, or the sort of person who would rather be on the barbie than watch Jamie operate one. Me, I like him – and I like the look of the thin strips of beef that are cooked on hot rocks, I like the way he’s got some little bits of fish on bendy twigs that grill over the heat with a charming, rustic simplicity and I even like it when he says things like “barbeque jamming”. You might not, and I quite understand why.
