I always feel a bit sorry for ‘Springwatch’, in that every year it seems to come when we are either a) shivering in a freezing downpour or b) sweltering in the summer heat, as this year. Well, at the moment, anyway. It does seem a bit weird to put a show out at the very end of May/early June and name it after Spring, but if you can get over that puzzler then there’s plenty of cheery, wholesome nature fun with the cheery and wholesome threesome Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan and Martin Hughes-Games at their Ynys-hir nature reserve HQ in Wales. Never quite sure if this series is for children or adults, but either way, there’s encouragement to get out there in the garden and spot birds, as well as footage of all sorts of animal excitement in the undergrowth. In this first episode, Br’er Fox makes an appearance, to say nothing of barn owls, blue tits, pied flycatchers and kingfishers.
