As a kid watching ‘Blue Peter’, there was often mention of Television Centre, which seemed to be an unimaginably large place full of exciting and interesting things and people, to say nothing of the ‘Blue Peter’ pets (who we later discovered were all part of a conspiracy to defraud viewers, or something). I guess I’m not alone in finding the BBC’s West London mothership a place with which the imagination conjures, for here is a whole programme about the history of the Shepherd’s Bush monolith, featuring contributions from David Attenborough, Terry Wogan, Angela Rippon and more. There’s a tale of how Robert Powell chatted up one of Pan’s People in the bar – 40 years later, they are still married. Or how about Philip Glenister on a ‘Doctor Who’ set-visit as a lad? Or Brian Blessed interfering with a statue in a most disrespectful way? Rather a nice little tribute before everything finally heads up to Salford for good.
