The excellent courtroom drama returns, and ambitious barrister Martha Costello is now a fully-fledged QC. Maxine Peake is again excellent as she plays the determined silk, now tackling a formidable opponent in the shape of Caroline Walker QC, nicknamed The Lady Macbeth of the Bar and played with delicious ferocity by Frances Barber. Costello is defending a London gang boss – whose solicitor is played by Phil Davis – accused of blinding a carwash attendant for “disrespecting” his second-in-command. Moral and ethical dilemmas aplenty, while Costello soon finds herself in a fight for justice and her own career. The cast is positively heaving with classy actors – Indira Varma pops up as a fiery solicitor who finds herself working with Rupert Penry-Jones, whose Clive character is swallowing his pride after being passed over for the QC position in favour of Costello. Lots to get your teeth into, and a welcome return for this top-notch drama.
