Sarah Millican’s success – it’s estimated she made £1.5 million last year, and her DVD has sold a quarter of a million copies – has been as huge as it has been rapid. Eight years ago, she was working at a job centre in Newcastle, now she is one of British stand-up’s most stellar names, and certainly its biggest female draw. She’ll also be familiar to many, of course, as a regular on the ‘Loose Women’ panel. Her charm comes from the disconnect between her frumpy, affable appearance and her barbed, risqué material. It’s a package that could translate very well to the chat-show sofa, and indeed worked well for Britain’s last female talk show host comedienne: Mrs Merton. Strangely small-fry bookings to start with, though: wildlife’s Chris Packham and sexpert Tracey Cox. Perhaps bigger names are waiting to see how Millican treats the guests.
