Some people feel that certain pop talent shows naming no names, Simon, are not about the actual voice, but in fact about the marketability and looks of the performer. Other people feel that the Pope might well be Catholic. Anyway, here comes the UK version of the international TV format where it is, arguably, All About The Voice. Contestants sing, but the judges have their backs turned, so they’re going only on the musical ability. Each judge can then choose ten contestants to mentor. If more than one judge wants a contestant, the singer can pick the one he or she thinks will be the best guide. Sing-offs and eliminations take us down to 20, and then the public votes on who will be the winner. Holly Willoughby and Reggie Yates co-host.
Basically, it’s ‘The X Factor’ with a twist and, like ‘X Factor’, its success as a TV programme all depends on the judges. So who are these “A-List coaches, four of the most successful figures in the music industry”? Sir Tom Jones, will.i.am, Jessie J and… Danny O’Donoghue. You know, the singer from The Script. The Irish rock band? Danny? The singer? In The Script? Danny O’Donoghue? No, it’s pronounced Dono-WHO. Well, he seems nice. The BBC better hope this works out; they have paid an absolute fortune for it – reportedly £22million for two series, making it their most expensive-ever entertainment show.
