This four-part take on the story of the ill-starred ocean liner, from ‘Downton Abbey’ creator Julian Fellowes, is the most costly TV drama made in the UK at £3 million an episode. So: is it any good? At the risk of stating the bleedin’ obvious, this – with its neatly inbuilt lines of social conflict between the haughty aristos in First Class, the squeezed middle in Second Class and the salt-of-the-earth iceberg fodder in Steerage – really is a continuation of ‘Downton Abbey’. Does the world need another retelling of the Titanic story, you might ask? Fellowes, amongst other things, says he wants to rehabilitate the reputation of First Officer William Murdoch, played here by Brian McCardie and portrayed as a coward in previous versions. Steven Waddington, Geraldine Somerville and Toby Jones are among the other talents in a huge, impressive cast. The series ends on 15 April, the 100 year anniversary of the tragedy.
