With ‘War Horse’ currently gathering tons of publicity, it’s not a bad time for a sweeping drama about the Great War, and the BBC’s ‘Birdsong’ certainly packs all the right emotional punches. This two-parter has been adapted from Sebastian Faulks’ brilliant bestseller by Abi Morgan – who wrote the screenplay for ‘The Iron Lady’ and controversial movie-of-the-moment ‘Shame’. Eddie Redmayne plays Stephen, a young Englishman who goes to live with a French family in 1910 and falls for Isabelle (Clémence Poésy). They have a passionate affair, but the War intervenes in ways too heart-breaking to spoiler with detail here. Just watch it. It’s beautifully filmed, well-acted and very moving.
