The idea of moving Sherlock to New York and having his trusty companion as a woman is intriguing, and Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu are great to watch and work very nicely together. But coming so soon after the perfect partnership of Cumberbatch and Freeman? (To say nothing of the also enjoyable Downey Jr and Law)… it feels a bit surplus to requirements. Still, well worth a look. Due to some unspecified bad business in London, recovering drug addict Holmes has to move to New York, where Watson – herself a surgeon forced to quit after a malpractice row – becomes his sober companion/sponsor. And crime solving ensues. In the first episode, they help the NYPD investigate a burglary that goes wrong; but really these Sherlock Holmes stories are all about the central relationship, and Miller-Liu is off to an enjoyable start.
