Aw, ‘Primeval’ is back. It’s been nearly a year and a half since it was on ITV: we were worried it might have been eaten by some sort of gruesome monster. But now it returns, like an excitable but slightly simple puppy, for a fifth season of ghastly creatures, some game CGI, plenty of cutesy romantic scenes between Connor and Abby (Andrew-Lee Potts and Hannah Spearritt, who are engaged off-screen) and some decent comic sections from Ben Miller. It’s not rocket science (it’s a mixture of time travel, zoology and dinosaurs, in fact) but it’s a nice formula. As this series begins, something horrible is happening underneath London (not Tube delays because of the Olympics). We find out more about former military man Matt (Ciarán McMenamin) and there’s even time for a bit of satire about public-private partnerships, with the Anomaly Research Centre now part-owned by scientist-cum-businessman-with-an-agenda Philip (Alexander Siddig).
