We confess to not being regular watchers of the ‘Universal’ TV channel (up the dusty end of the remote control, 113 on Sky; 162 on Virgin), but wanted to draw your attention to this US remake of one of Britain’s most powerful and influential dramas of the last 20-odd years. Lynda La Plante’s 1991 drama propelled Helen Mirren towards global stardom, and set a template for relentlessly grim, dark police procedurals; as well as breaking new ground by making a complicated, often unsympathetic woman its lead detective. In this US reimagining, Jane Tennison becomes NYPD homicide Detective Jane Timoney, but the struggles against her chauvinistic colleagues and the brutal crimes are still there. Fans of the original should check it out, mainly for a really excellent central performance from Maria Bello. Sadly, the show didn’t fare well in the States and looks to have been cancelled.
