The much-loved former 'Doctor Who' actor gave a brilliant Hamlet with the RSC recently and here discusses the role, widely regarded as the greatest of all acting challenges. He is joined by others who have played the troubled, conflicted Prince of Denmark, including Jude Law, Simon Russell-Beale and Ben Whishaw, who was seen as Richard II on the BBC last week. The engaging documentary features some magnificently actorly observations, from Russell-Beale's dedication of his version to his late mother ("it was my gift to her") and Whishaw's observation that "this is the most transparent part I have played." If you can indulge the luvvie talk, there's plenty of intelligent and interesting stuff in here, but for good, old fashioned common sense, you can't top Jude Law's piece of key advice for playing the part: "learn your lines." Oh Jude. Don't cut yourself on that razor-sharp mind now.
