You’ve got to hand it to BBC3. They’re not messing about with the titles of their factual/human interest programmes. Chris Birch was a Welsh bloke who liked his beer and his rugby. Larking about with mates in a field he tried to do a back-flip to show off, broke his neck and suffered a stroke. When he woke up, he says, he knew with absolute certainty that he was gay. Out went the girlfriend and the job in a bank; in came a boyfriend, a loss of eight stone, an interest in interior design and a job in a hairdressers. It opens up some fascinating neuroscience, a huge nature-nurture debate about homosexuality, as well as one about whether strokes can turn someone from one cliché into another. Still, he seems a very nice bloke and he’s happy – although there were some major issues with his family after the revelation. A fascinating little documentary.
