ITV’s cop drama about two Manchester murder detectives returns for a second series. The best things about season one were the casting and performances of Suranne Jones as intuitive, impulsive DC Rachel Bailey, and Lesley Sharp as her older, wiser partner DC Janet Scott. They’re both on good form again. Moving to Monday nights for this second series, Rachel finds her estranged brother, played by Liam Boyle, turning up on her doorstep. Being as he’s a convicted armed robber, this leads to various complications… Also new on the scene is Rachel’s sexy old flame, also a cop, played by ex-EastEnder Sean Maguire. The procedural side of the show – kicking off this week with a grisly two-parter involving torture and murder – is solid, but it’s the relationships between the two leads, and a chance to see a female take on this well-trodden beat, that makes the series tick.
