The cast of award-winning sitcom ‘Modern Family’ are suing production company 20th Century Fox for allegedly violating California law in regard to their contacts.
Sofia Vergara, Ty Burrell, Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson are among those named in the lawsuit looking to void their current contracts.
The lawsuit states: "'Modern Family' has been a breakout critical and financial success. That success, however, has been built upon a collection of illegal contracts.”
A Fox spokeswoman refused to comment but did confirm that production has been delayed on the upcoming fourth season, with the first readthrough of the script cancelled.
It is believed that the move is a bid for higher pay.
The law states that a personal service contract such as the ones held by the cast can run no longer than seven years, however in January 2009 their deals were set to run until June of 2016.
Last week, ‘Modern Family’ was nominated for 14 Emmy Awards, including Best TV comedy.
