Synopsis

A boy's innocence is destroyed by his unrequited love for a beautiful Victorian lady who hires him to act as go-between in her illicit affair with a lowly farmer. The experience is so traumatic that he never marries, and as an old man he looks back on his life and his experiences as the lovers' envoy. But unexpectedly, he is again approached by his Aphrodite. Harold Pinter's screenplay is from L P Hartley's novel.
