- Watch video: Lost - The Story So Far

This week on Lost...

Gripping action, dramatic twists and puzzling revelations, Lost has returned from its hiatus in great form...

Jack’s camp: In a change of pace, we saw very little of Jack and company and nothing of the freighter. Early in the episode we see Ray, the freighter’s doctor, washed up dead on the beach. By the end of the episode, Faraday manages to get the satellite phone to transmit Morse code and asks the freighter what happened. In an intriguing twist, Faraday announces that the helicopter will return in the morning but Bernard decodes the response to be, “What are you talking about? The doctor is fine.” It’s unclear why Faraday is lying but we wouldn’t be surprised if it has to do with the time distortion on the island.

It seems entirely possible that at the time the freighter receives the message, Ray has not yet died. Rather than try explaining this to the survivors, Faraday makes up a simple lie to satisfy the group. Well it’s either that or Faraday is complicit in a nefarious plot to betray the survivors... same difference, no?

The real action this week took place with Ben and the group in the Barracks. Speedy recap: Mercenaries break in, Lock’s group barricade themselves in Ben’s house, bullets fly and a tense stand-off ensues as the mercenaries hold Alex at gunpoint. Ben calls their bluff, which turns out not to be a bluff as they kill Alex without hesitation. Wow. Ben then runs into a secret room and summons the smoke monster, which then devastates the mercenaries as Ben, Locke, Sawyer, Hurley, Claire, and Aaron make a run for safety.

Getting to see the smoke monster in action was a treat. Furthermore it served as instant karma and catharsis to Alex’s murder. Most interesting, however, was seeing Ben’s immediate reaction to Alex’s death; the flash of guilt and self-doubt giving way to shock and anger revealed much of Ben’s character. His utterance of “He changed the rules” was intriguing and its repetition within the flashbacks raises even more questions.

The flashbacks, as always, were entertaining and revealing. We now know that Sayid finally found and married Nadia but that she was murdered sometime after. Furthermore, we saw how Ben first recruited Sayid, playing to his anger and grief. In later scenes we saw Sayid exacting retribution and making a commitment to Ben to assist in the future. In a final, exiting twist, Ben breaks into Charles Widmore’s apartment and accuses him of “breaking the rules” and declares that he is going to hunt down and kill Charles’s daughter. As eager as we are to see Widmore suffer, we definitely don’t want anything to happen to Penny and wouldn’t be surprised if there is a showdown between Ben and Desmond in a future series.

With only a few episodes left until the finale we can’t wait to see what happens next. Be sure to come back Monday for another recap and more speculation!
