LOST ON SKY ONE, SUNDAYS AT 9PM

We went into this season’s finale with high expectations, looking forward to stunning sequences and answers to some of the bigger mysteries of the show. Though the two hours were incredibly riveting and though some puzzles were answered, Lost left us with even more questions and we can’t wait to see what happens next season. As this episode contained way too much content to fully discuss here, we are going to cover just the highlights and our reactions...

On the Island:
The action scenes with Kearny and the mercenaries were excellent and we loved the struggle between Kearny and Sayid. Kearny’s reemergence at the end was fairly predictable (of course he is wearing body armor!) but Ben’s brutal attack was terrifying considering Kearny’s life being linked to those on the freighter. Ben’s apathy toward innocent lives showed us once again what a monster he can be… it’s incredible that everyone keeps listening to him (both on the Island and in the flash-forwards).

Watching the evacuation of the beach and the situation with the bomb on the freighter, we couldn’t help but feel a bit cheated as we knew that most would not make it off the Island and that several key characters would die. It was good to finally see the gaps filled in and to watch the Oceanic 6 make it back to civilization. It was a nice surprise to see Desmond made it off the Island and finally reunite with Penny; we can’t wait to discover what part they will play in the remaining seasons.

The climax of the on Island scenes may have been when Ben finally turns the wheel in the basement of the Orchid and moves the Island. We knew that it was coming but that didn’t prevent it from being pretty cool. Now that Ben has finally left the Island, Locke can finally take his place as leader of the Others. We’re curious to see how he’ll perform under the pressure that accompanies the responsibility and wouldn’t be surprised if he breaks down and can’t handle it.

Flash-Forwards:
The flash-forwards this week revolved mostly around the Oceanic 6 coping with life after the Island. Reoccurring themes were Jack’s desire to return and the mysterious Jeremy Bentham. Apparently Jeremy had visited the Oceanic 6 and implored them to return, with no success. Toward the end of the episode we know that he is the man in the coffin and in the last moments he is revealed to be none other than John Locke. Though the revelation that the Jeremy is Locke was a bit of a shocker, we still have no idea how or why he died and what has transpired since the escape from the Island. As already noted, we felt that part of this season suffered because we knew who would die and who would get off the Island. Hopefully our knowledge of Locke’s death doesn’t have the same affect on next season.

We’re not sure what next season will bring but it’s clear a large part will involve Jack and Ben convincing/tricking everyone into returning to the Island. Hopefully we’ll get to see what has transpired on the Island in their how Locke adapts as leader of the Others. Off the Island, we’re expecting to see Penny and Desmond on the run from both Charles Widmore and Ben and further encounters between Sun and Charles. Beyond that we’re betting Locke makes a few appearances as Jeremy and that the mysterious circumstances around his death will be revealed.
