Discovery Cancels ‘Everest Jump Live’ in Light of Deadly Avalanche

After Mt. Everest suffered its deadliest avalanche early Friday which killed 13 people, Discovery Channel has cancelled “Everest Jump Live,” scheduled for May 11.

“In light of the overwhelming tragedy at Mt Everest and respect for the families of the fallen, Discovery Channel will not be going forward with Everest Jump Live. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the whole Sherpa community,” a statement from the channel read.

Discovery Channel was planning to air a live jump from Mt. Everest, following professional climber Joby Ogwyn as he made the leap. However, the devastating avalanche forced the net to change plans.

“The avalanche last night on Mount Everest is a terrible tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with those who are lost and with their families. The immediate priority for Joby and the team is to assist the search and rescue efforts in any way possible,” Discovery Channel said in an earlier statement.

Nepal authorities halted climbing temporarily on Sunday in the search for the three missing Sherpa guides.

Discovery was planning to broadcast five nights of live programs from Everest Base Camp beginning May 5 to lead up to the main event.
