With Season Eight confirmed as the final season of the hit television show Dexter, which is based on the novels from Jeff Lindsay, it's natural to expect that this'll be the last time we'll see Dexter, Debra and Miami Metro PD. Or will it be?
Obviously we have no idea what is going to happen this season, and what we do know isn't that much. We know that Hannah Mckay played by Yvonne Strahovsky will be returning around half way through the season to get revenge. We know that 'the Shield's' Kenny Johnson will be appearing as a U.S. Marshall hunting a serial killer (Dexter, Hannah, The Brain Surgeon, someone else? Who knows) and we know that someone might die towards the end of the series.
The person on the receiving end of the EMT crew was strongly hinted at during Comic-Con, although it might have been a double bluff. Jennifer Carpenter, who plays Dexter's sister Debra, who is currently on a severe downward spiral of guilt, announced that she begged the showrunner's to kill off Debra. Whether they listened or not is another matter entirely as a contradicting rumour has been floating around, one that could mean that despite this being the last season, it won't be the last time we see this universe onscreen.
The interwebs are ablaze with the rumour that a Dexter spin-off will be happening, starring none-other than Debra Morgan herself. This rumour has been kindled and encouraged however by bosses at Showtime refusing to deny it. David Nevins, the boss of the Showtime network addressed the matter in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
"We won't rule it out; all options are on the table as to where it could go after this. There's nothing actively happening, but you never know what the future holds. We need to get through this season and see how the dust settles and then see where we go from there. I won't rule it out, but I'm not actively planning anything."
He makes a good point, because as previously mentioned Debra might not be alive at the end of the series. In fact we have no idea if anyone will be alive at the end of the series; there are so many possible theories as to how the show will end. But surely the news that after Dexter there may be something that fans of the show can hang on to is good news.
Especially if after the end of this series Debra is still alive, then we can really start getting excited at the possibility. A few other rumours are that Harrison will grow up and we'll see 'Harrison' with Dexter's son playing the role in society that his father once did. Or we'' see 'The Morgans' with Dexter and Debra and Harrison all happily running around killing bad guys. I'd be happy with anything really.
Are you excited at the prospect of a 'Dexter' spin-off? Who do you think should be its star? Or would you prefer it if they left the show alone?
