'Coronation Street's Beverley Callard has told Yahoo TV that the actor who played her on-screen husband once accidentally set her hair on fire.

The actress, who returned to the soap this week as Liz McDonald, said the incident happened after a lively party to mark her 'Corrie' co-star Sue Johnston's exit from 'Brookside'.

Beverley was travelling in the back of the chaffeur-driven car with Charlie Lawson, who played Jim McDonald, when she fainted and fell onto his lit cigarette.

She said: "Roy the driver said 'Charlie, I smell burning' and Charlie was banging me on the head [to put out the fire]."

However, the actress had no recollection of the incident the following day and got a shock when she was filming a scene in the corner shop, as she explained:

"I ran my fingers through my hair and this hair came out and I said to Charlie 'I think I have vodka poisoning because my hair is falling out'.

"He said: 'Don't be f***ing stupid - you set your head on fire, that's all!"

Viewers saw Liz McDonald return to 'Coronation Street' this week after she helped her son Steve to buy the Rovers.

Her return is part of a big week on 'Corrie' that also sees Roy and Hayley pay a heart-warming visit to Blackpool and Kylie finding out the truth about David's reign of terror on his brother Nick.
