Contestant wins points for 'w*****' on Countdown

Gentle daytime quiz show ‘Countdown’ saw the reappearance of an old foe yesterday when “w*****” was given as an answer.

New host Nick Hewer, most famous for his role in ‘The Apprentice’, barely batted an eyelid as contestant Mark gleefully said the word, which was bleeped out.

Mark won six points because it is in the Oxford dictionary, but dictionary corner had a better answer - ‘reawaken’.

It’s not the first time the famous blue studio has heard blue language. In 2010 two contestants missed an easy six points, failing to re-arrange the letters D, E, K, C, U and F.

‘W*****’ has popped up before, under the reigns of hosts Des O’Connor, Jeff Stelling and Richard Whiteley.
