Who's the new Doctor?

Matt Smith

Matt Smith has been confirmed as the new star of Doctor Who.

The actor will replace current Doctor David Tennant when he quits the show next year.

The BBC revealed the news during a special episode of Doctor Who Confidential and the announcement follows months of speculation about which actor would be stepping into the TARDIS.

Twenty-six-year-old Smith is the youngest actor ever to play the Doctor - Peter Davison previously held that honour after playing the Doctor when he was 29 back in 1981.

Matt Smith will be familiar to some viewers from his roles in political drama Party Animals and BBC One drama Ruby In The Smoke, in which he starred opposite Doctor Who's Billie Piper.

Smith, who was cast in the role at Christmas said: "I've got this wonderful journey in front of me where I've got this six months to build this Time Lord - and that's such an exciting prospect."

David Tennant will play the Doctor in four one-off specials next year before Smith takes over in Spring 2010.

It was time for a change, I thought Rhydian (X Factor) would have made a great Dr Who.

No way! He can't be the doctor? Who is he anyway? I hope he's a good actor because he definitely doesn't have the looks to get him though!

thank Christ it isn't james "yellow pages" nesbitt, - "hello, can you give me a quote for a tardis?" it's not long since Ecclestone was the golden boy, but then David Tennant took over and did a great job. let's give the new lad a chance, he's not patrick troughton but on the other hand he looks OK and he's an actor of some skill. good luck Smith!

stop complaining, hes gonna be different, yeah, but so was david tennant! they've all been different so give him a chance! besides, he's not ugly, he just looks young! i think he'll be really different, and bring a new aspect to the role, WHICH IS WHAT THEY ALL DO!!!! its good to have relatively unknown actors anyway, and at least its not a woman!!!!
