The Apprentice's Nicholas De Lacy Brown

- Watch video: This year's candidates

From the opening moments of last night's Apprentice it was clear that we had another bunch of jumped-up, arrogant, cringeworthy know-it-alls battling for a job with Sir Alan - in other words we are in for another excellent series.

Ian can't even bring himself to say the word 'loser', Jennifer rates herself as 'the best salesperson in Europe', Claire says she likes to crash through everything like her family's german shepherd dog and scary Sara doesn't like to beat her opposition, she likes to thrash them.

The first task saw the group split into male and female teams and given a load of fish to sell at a London market. Easy? Well, no. The teams struggled to tell their Monkfish from their Sea Breams and ended up selling the fish at a fraction of the actual value.

Other highlights of the first episode included sulky Ian pursing his lips and declaring that he hated losing, Lucinda's kooky dress sense (do health and safety regulations allow people to sell fish wearing a purple woollen beret?) and, of course, Raef's hair - what's that all about?

The award for best line has to go to Sir Alan's sidekick Nick who asked the boys' team "Did it strike anybody that a £5 lobster is bloody cheap?"

The boardroom showdown saw the girls triumph and drippy boys' team leader Alex chose to take Nicholas and Raef back into the boardroom with him.

Things quickly escalated into a class war with Nicholas declaring that the group had split into the educated and the non-educated.  Alex was quick to point out that he also had a university degree which led Nicholas to point out more differences between the boys - he likes to talk about arts and culture and they like to talk about football apparently. The writing was really on the wall for Nicholas at that point and Sir Alan rightly fired him.

Surely these people aren't typical of people who are succesful in business? They state they have great careers and are already on stupidly high salaries, why would they want to work for Alan Sugar? I can see fame as the only reason. I'd also love to know where the find them. Maybe if we cut one open we'd find they were made in a factory in china for reality tv progs.

Forget about the class war- the guy who should have been kicked out was the bozo who sold the remaining 150-odd-quid of fish for £50- after saying he couldn't possibly let it go for less than £75! My 12-year-old daughter could have negotiated better. I seem to remember he was also the same bloke who got all chippy and pouty-lipped that Alex hadn't mentioned him in the list of good performers.

It was wonderful watching Nicholas dig his own grave and Sir Alan asking if his Bar Exams were outstanding. Brilliant! Firing was well deserved - he needs to get out in the big bad world and find out what REAL people are up to. Trouble is I now have to make sure I am near a TV on a Wed. evening so that I don't miss it. Long may it continue.

I actually feel sorry for all of the contestants in The Apprentice, it's sickening to watch them crawl all over Alan Sugar and the show displays everything that's wrong with capitalism, a total disregard for your fellow human being and the ridiculous notion that the measure of success is based on how much money you make.

If these are the final selection, god help the rest. I have never seen such a bunch of twits in my life. The men were like a bunch of whimps and the women were clueless. All they had to do was sell some fish, how simple was that. Wish that idiot Raef, the ponse trying to look like Hugh Grant, failing miserably, should have been fired as well. The one who was fired was a chinless wonder who should never have been selected to do anything.
