It was difficult not to think of Billie Piper's ITV2 series Secret Diary Of A Call Girl when watching the first part of BBC4's new adpation of Fanny Hill last night.
Rebecca Night, who plays the title role of Fanny, sounded uncannily like Piper at times as she narrated the story, then there were the pieces straight to camera and of course the subject matter. Same profession, different century.
But the similarities ended there as, unlike Secret Diary, this was top notch costume drama (or lack of costumes drama) from the pen of the always-reliable Andrew Davies. Night was great in the title role and Alison Steadman gave a scene-stealing performance as a bawdy madam.
There was a lot of speculation about how the original book's explicit content would be brought to the small screen ahead of the broadcast, however, last night's show was unlikely to cause too many sleepless nights for the nation's moral guardians. Maybe things get even saucier in part two?
What did you think of the drama?

Good acting from a strong cast and as you say, Andrew Davis never lets you down. And Night is top totty as well into the bargain. I stopped watching the Billie Piper show after 1 episode as it was plotless as well as witless and you never empathised with her character. I hope Fanny Hill gets even better.
