Basil Brush is being investigated after a complaint was made about an alleged racist joke in the puppet's BBC series.
A complaint was received by the police following a recent screening of an old episode that features the fox telling jokes about gypsies, reports Metro.
The episode, which was originally shown six years ago, features a sketch where a gypsy woman tries to sell Basil some wooden pegs.
A police spokesperson said: "We can confirm we have received a complaint about a TV show featuring Basil Brush from a member of the public in February. The complaint was logged as an incident of a racist nature."
Joseph Jones, a spokesperson for the Romany, Gipsy and Irish Traveller Network, said: "Racist abuse of black people is quite rightly no longer deemed acceptable, but when a comedian makes a joke on TV about pikeys or gypos, there's no comeback."

What a pathetic thing to do, i mean its a childs televison programme. They shouldnt have been watching it anyway!
Posted by: c.l.palfreyman01 on Mon Mar 17 09:41PM | Report abusethe question was do you think he hould be banned. not lets all have a frree for all on the alleged shortcomings of travellers. did anyone notice that there was only one complaint. the rest of us couldnt care less. what the hell has income tax, vat, road tax, tv licences got to do with it. i am a gypsy and havepaid my way my whole life as have all my family and allmost every other traveller i know. do you people actually know any gypsies? i bet you dont, because we are watchful of narrow minded bigoted ignorant individuals. what can be going on in a grown ups mind when an invitation to comment on basil brush launches him into a speech about our children. there are good and bad in every race and you people will probably not encounter the normal gypsy because only the lowest gypsies would give people like you the time of day. before the rest of you make your copycat postings think about how you got your information. how sad that so many of you just nod your heads and follow sheeplike. grow up ,broaden your horizons and speak your own mind.
