Faux-cooking hell

Tue Mar 11 10:33AM by TV Editor

Last night Delia Smith was back with her latest series. It's just called Delia, nothing else. The accompanying book is one of the fastest selling non-fiction titles of all time, so this was bound to be good...right?

WRONG!

It a cringe-inducing 30 minutes, Delia borrowed TV concepts used years ago by Jamie and Nigella (we're all on first name terms here) and taught us how to cheat at making dinner from a series of preprepared items and a second mortgage.

Now we know that everything Delia recommends will fly out of the shops. All I can say is I wish I had shares in Aunt Bessie, because Delia's liberal use of frozen mashed potato means it's bound to be a best seller - who knew it even existed? I have nothing against quick cooking per se, but it's pretty easy to knock up real food without resorting to frozen mash, precooked salmon, preboiled quail eggs, instant cheese sauce, and pre-grated cheese. I mean if you're going to go to that much expense for one meal, why not go out? At least you won't have to wash up!

Do you think Delia's the Queen of convenience or would you rather boil your own egg?

Watching her first programme - my eyes nearly fell out of my head! I have never seen such appalling rubbish in my life - just dreadful.

Delia Smith is useless. She is so smug. She probably hasn't had to cook proper meals on a limited budget for ages if, in fact, she ever has! Everything she cooked had have garlic in it so that everything she cooked tased of garlic - YUK!!

Her book and her show are pure rubbish. If this is what cooking is today I would rather pull out my Granny's cookbooks. Who needs frozen mash? Mashed Potatoes or Mashed Turnips are one of the easiest dishes to prepare. Also prepared things are expensive and full of salt!

Well I used to worship the St Delia but not impressed at this current series. The book isn't much cop either. If you've got time to cook, you've got time to prepare and using pre-prep items is cheating - feels almost like sacrilege. Shame on you Delia!

I'd rather boil my own head than watch Delia, let alone cook anything she recommends. I remember seeing her years ago showing us how to boil an egg. I've never seen such a performance!! Talk about from the sublime to the ridiculous! Now she's instant? Doesn't surprise me. Perhaps her football team are short of a striker and she needs to raise some easy money. She won't get any of mine!!

Frozen mash? Instant cheese sauce? Is this for real? Oh yuk, I thought the world had lost it when we were presented with frozen left-overs by the name of bubble and squeak, but really, no self-respecting cook would sink that low! Sent the woman here, I'll show her how to cook, and cook properly, an excellent three course meal on a tiny budget. Frozen mash...who'd a'thought it? Mutters off into the kitchen...........
