The BBC has announced that it is to axe long-running children's drama series Grange Hill.

Grange Hill, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this Friday (nice timing!), will not be recommissioned after the current series ends.

Speaking about the decision, CBBC Controller Anne Gilchrist said: "The lives of children have changed a great deal since Grange Hill began and we owe it to them to reflect this."

The series has tackled controversial issues such as teenage pregnancy, racism and, most famously, drug abuse during its 30-year-run.

The Zammo Maguire drugs storyline in the '80s even spawned the infamous charity single Just Say No.

The series also helped launch the careers of the likes of Todd Carty, Susan Tully and Michelle Gayle - and a teenage Naomi Campbell even popped up as an extra.

Last month the show's creator Phil Redmond called for the show to be scrapped over plans to move away from hard-hitting storylines in a bid to appeal to younger viewers. His prayers have been answered!

Will you be sad to see the end of Grange Hill? Who are your favourite characters and what are your memories of the series?

Grange Hill was the best programme to watch when I was a @#$%ager. The scene that sticks out in my mind is when they are in class and they started humming. They did the same to one of our teachers too, needless to say she got angry. Mr Baxter was a funny teacher. Its a shame its being axed.

I loved Grange Hill as a kid, always remember the opening credits with the cartoon sausage on a fork coming out to meet you from the TV screen. My brothers and I were avid viewers. The programme has continued for a long time but lets face it, present day Grange Hill will never really match the early years. Ah memories......................

Pity, i watched it, when it first came out 30 years ago, it was very good, we even nicknamed some of our teachers, after the Grange Hill Teachers.

Well most things changei n kid's TV. I had just started secondary school when Grange Hill started and it was great for us then. It's good to remember now that thanks to programmes like Grange Hill, kids became far more part of mainstream TV..those same actors you mentioned all were in Eastenders for example. All we want is more imaginative TV drama...no more reality TV please!

I never forgot that image of Zammo slumped by the lockers.... it meant that I successfully managed to survive the Rave generation of the late 80s/early 90s without ever wishing to take drugs - very successful campaign, it's a shame that the BBC is taking away what was in its day a cutting edge drama, that appeals to older children and @#$%agers, but clearly the audience has dwindled now that they're all out on the streets getting drunk after school instead... Kids these days *tuts*.
