Don your black armbands, the day is upon us!

After 33 years in Coronation Street, tonight will see Vera Duckworth's final scenes in the show.

Vera is not just one of Corrie's, but one of soap's all-time great characters. We've followed her from her time as one of Mike Baldwin's mouthy factory girls and Ivy Tilsley's right-hand woman, to her glory days as Rovers' landlady.

There's been tears as her bad boy son Terry has stitched her up time and time again, most notably when he sold her grandson Tommy. But there's been plenty of laughter too especially with Vera's claims that she is related to the Royal family and of course in her ongoing relationship with husband Jack.

Vera's departure leaves only a handful of the truly great Coronation Street characters remaining. The exact details of how she leaves are being kept top secret but it is bound to be a tearjerker. Let's hope actress Liz Dawn has a long and happy retirement.

    i will miss vera she is the main person in the program she adds a lot of laughter in the soap i hope she enjoys her life in spain good look 2 liz dawn

    Yes I am going to miss Vera, I think they should have let them go to Blackpool and let Jack come back on visits to the Street. It's like loosing one of the family.
