Is John and Edward's success damaging The X Factor's credibility?

John and Edward from The X Factor

Dublin twins John and Edward Grimes topped The X Factor public vote last weekend, according to newspaper reports. Yes, you did just read that correctly.

The duo, who have been slated by the show's judges for their lack of singing ability, proved a hit with viewers after their performance of the Ricky Martin hit She Bangs.

Their success meant that Danyl Johnson and Miss Frank, who were both praised by the judges, found themselves in the bottom two.

An X Factor insider told The Sun: "It is extraordinary. John and Edward were miles ahead of any other act. Whoever wins the X Factor, you can usually guarantee they can sing.

"If John and Edward win, it will no longer be a show about great singers - it could be disastrous. But you know what? It could happen."

So, is The X Factor no longer a singing contest and is it in danger of losing all credibility?

The answer to that is that it never really has been a singing contest - especially not in the early stages of the live shows.

Saturday nights on The X Factor are all about entertainment and at the moment the twins are the most entertaining act on the show. Who can honestly say that they don't look forward to seeing what they are going to perform?

Another factor for their success is likely to be that voting tends to be quite low during the initial stages, with most fans waiting until the last few weeks before picking up the phone. This would explain the massive success of Eoghan Quigg during the first weeks of the show last year, but ultimately he had to settle for third place in the final behind the much more talented Alexandra Burke and JLS.

If the twins manage to buck this trend and keep on piling in the votes right up to the show's final then the programme will have a problem. John and Edward may have a career ahead of them as TV presenters (Irish Ant and Dec anyone?) but singers they are clearly not. If they stay in until the later stages, will we see a situation similar to John Sergeant on last year's Strictly, where they voluntarily pull out to save what credibility the show has left?

What do you think of the twins' success in the show? Is it turning it into a farce? Maybe you are one of the viewers who is voting for them? Let us know...

YAWN....... who cares? X Factor is a second-rate show that has passed it's kill-by date. Cowell is a decent and shrewd businessman, but otherwise the most talented of the lot is Dermot O'Leary, the compere, who deserves better than this nonsense. Kill it of soon - PLEASE!!!

At the end of the day it is a public vote, (popularity contest always rules over the judges). Good luck to them however wrong you might belive it to be.
