One of Coronation Street's best-loved characters will find out they have breast cancer in a shock storyline later this year.
Sally Webster, who has featured in the show for 23 years, will get the diagnosis in an episode to be screened in December.
The plotline will see her get the news just as husband Kevin plans to leave her for his mistress, Molly. When Sally tells him about her test results he is forced to choose between the two women.
The producers of the show are working closely with medical experts and breast cancer charities to ensure the portrayal is as realistic as possible.
Actress Sally Whittaker, who plays Sally in the soap, said: "I do know women who have suffered or are suffering from breast cancer. For the last year, I have been fundraising for breast cancer charities and am a long-standing patron for The Genesis Appeal. So, when I was told about this storyline I was determined to do it justice for all the women out there who are going through what Sally is."
A spokesperson for the show added: "Breast cancer is a disease which affects so many women and their families. We are keen to ensure that the storyline accurately reflects the many problems and issues faced by breast cancer sufferers."

Yes, a very good Idea, as millions of people think that soaps are for real, sad reflection on their insulated lives really
Posted by: arturmaclean on Thu Sep 17 12:54PM | Report abuseIf it's portrayed in the right way without being too depressing it's a good way to highlight people getting treatment early enough and to show hope.
Posted by: simonandandreamanship on Thu Sep 17 12:58PM | Report abusepeople who have a problem with it need to realise that it is a real life matter which soaps (supposidly based on real life) much assess or cover in order to keep up to date with key issues

Posted by: kilbey.family on Thu Sep 17 01:01PM | Report abuseI think it's a good idea as then more people are aware of these issues which affect so many women through out their lives.
Posted by: backnovember on Thu Sep 17 01:02PM | Report abusebreast cancer is a devestating diagnosis on its own. To combine the love triangle and with this very serious subject is, in my opinion, heartless.

Posted by: prudenheather on Thu Sep 17 01:05PM | Report abuseAfter my mum died of cancer I was sick of seeing tv dramas acting the issues. Its very difficult to escape from the reality of it as a suffer or family of a suffer if its plastered all over the tv as well. I felt as though the actors were ridiculing the agony my family & I had gone through over a 5 yr period. Many yrs have passed and I still know that having to watch this issue raised on Coronation Street will remind me of bad times in my life. At the same time though its important that the issues are raised and not ignored & that people out there going through this are not alone. Well done Coronation Street - Good Luck with this.
Posted by: gina948 on Thu Sep 17 01:05PM | Report abuseHaving had breast cancer at 34, this storyline will be too close to home for me to want to watch. However, I hope it will be an education to many other women, and men (they can get b/c too) and it may help them learn what the signs for this disease are.I like to try and forget about my illness when watching tv, so I won't be tuning in when this story is shown.
