Tonight sees the launch of Five's brand new nightly magazine show, Live From Studio Five. The show promises 'news - but not as you know it' and each night presenters Ian Wright, Melinda Messenger and Kate Walsh (from The Apprentice) will be discussing the big stories of the day alongside studio guests. We caught up with Melinda and Kate to find out more...
Can you tell us a bit about the new show?
Kate: It's a new news magazine show that's on Monday to Friday at 6.30 to 7.30pm. It's myself, Melinda and Ian, it's live and it's going to be fantastic fun. We're going to be talking about whatever is topical that day and as we're all quite out there with strong opinions it should be good fun to watch.
Melinda: The nice thing about it as well is that it's no holds barred. Normally in television there is a formula that you follow. We really want this to be something that has never been done before. Something that really breaks the mould and is unique. It's an exciting project to be part of.
Are you looking forward to working with Ian Wright?
Both: Yes!
Melinda: He's so controversial which is brilliant.
Is there anyone in particular you would like as a guest on the show?
Melinda: One person who may come on is Katie Price. I know she has strong views, as have the three of us, so I think it would be very interesting. And she's all over the press at the moment!
Some people may compare your programme to BBC's The One Show? What sets it apart from that?
Kate: It's going to be more light-hearted and chatty than The One Show and the kind of things we will be talking about will be very different.
Melinda: It's just because it's on at the same time. The three of us will be sat there debating what's happening in the news and the feeling will hopefully be that of a group of friends together having an informal chat. The look and feel willl be very different to The One Show.
It sounds a bit like Loose Women...
Kate: (laughing) I don't think Ian would like to hear you say that!
Melinda: It's very difficult to compare it to any other show as I think at the moment there isn't anything else on like this.
Kate, have you had any feedback from Sir Alan Sugar?
Kate: I haven't spoken to him about the show. He was very kind to me when I found out that I hadn't got the job and told me to get in touch if I needed any advice. To be honest, if I had of gone into the business arena I would have called on his advice but I didn't contact him because of the nature of this opportunity. He's a very busy man and I wouldn't bother him unless I had something relevant to ask.
Melinda: We will try to get him on as a guest.
Kate: Definitely!
Would you like any of the other Apprentice candidates on as guests?
Kate: Well, I'm still with Phillip and I'm good friends with some of the others - Deborah and Howard in particular. We're all on speaking terms. Yeah, would be good fun to have them on the show.
What's the best thing about doing a live TV show?
Melinda: The best thing is the feeling that anything can happen. It's such a unique type of energy - you just don't know what's going to happen next.
Are there any bad things about live TV?
Melinda: (laughing) Yes, the fact that anything can happen! Once you say something it's out there and you can't take it back!
Live From Studio Five is on Five, weeknights at 6.30pm
