Wogan quits breakfast show

Terry Wogan

Sir Terry Wogan has announced live on air that he is leaving his Radio 2 breakfast show.

The presenter told listeners that he will be replaced by Chris Evans when he steps down from the long-running show at the end of the year.

Wake Up With Wogan is the UK's most popular breakfast show with almost eight million listeners and Sir Terry has hosted the show for two stints since 1972, totalling 27 years.

Breaking the news to listeners just after 8am this morning, he said: "This is the hardest thing I have ever done in my broadcasting career, to say goodbye to you in the mornings. But if not this year, when? Five years, 10?

"I'd rather leave while we're in love, as the song says, while the programme is the most popular on British radio, while we still delight in each other's company."

He also revealed that he will not be disappearing from the airwaves completely and will be hosting a new weekend programme on Radio 2.

Sir Terry added that he hoped listeners would give his 'good friend' Chris Evans the 'same love and affection' when he takes over.

Chris Evans will be seen by many as a controversial choice of replacement for Sir Terry. The DJ, who currently presents Radio 2's Drivetime show, was fired as presenter of Radio 1's breakfast show back in 1997 after he continually failed to turn up to work.

How do you feel about the news of Sir Terry's departure? Is Chris Evans a suitable replacement? Let us know what you think...

I think it is a shame but like Sir Terry said he can't continue to present it for ever. I think Zoe Ball would have been a more suitable replacement but will wait and see how Chris Evans does.

Janet and John won't be the same without Tel, but he is around 100 years old so deserves a rest.

"So long it's been good to know ya!" Will miss you very much - hope Chris Evens (who's drivetime show is great) is pleased to take over from such an icon.

Sad to hear about Terry's departure but Chris is an ideal replacement. I don't think that Chris's mistakes in the past should be held against him - he currently has an excellent daily show and has always been my 'preferred candidate' to replace Terry.
