Coronation Street's Rovers Return

ITV soap Coronation Street will reportedly be turned into a stage musical next year.

Composer Trisha Ward is working on an all-singing, all-dancing version of the show to celebrate its 50th anniversary, reports The Sun.

A Coronation Street source told the paper: "With this special anniversary coming up, we have all been thinking how best to celebrate. A musical could be just the ticket."

The composer, who has previously won acclaim for her adaption of Shakespeare's Macbeth, hinted at the collaboration on her website.

Other rumoured tie-ins to mark next year's milestone include food products, a computer game and a beer.

A spokesperson for the soap said: "We are talking about doing a musical as part of the 50th celebrations, but it's just one of many ideas."

Corrie marked its 40th anniversary back in 2000 with a special live episode of the show. Prince Charles visited the set on that occasion and footage of him meeting cast members was used in the programme.

Do you think Corrie will work as a musical? How do you think they should celebrate the 50th anniversary? Let us know...

It could work - more in style of Willy Russell's 'Blood Brothers' than a big all singing and all dancing musical? V Steward

I think you will find it was The Queen who visited the set on the occasion of Corrie's 40th anniversary. She appeared in a scene meeting Audrey Roberts who, in the storyline, was being met by the Queen in her role as a member of Weatherfield council (if I remember correctly she was the Mayor at the time but I'm not sure on this point)

Couldn't care less. Never watch the soaps. To depressing Eastenders are always shouting at each other.

If I were a scriptwriter for Coronation Street I would suggest a 50 minute special with Ken Barlow going to bed (in gold pyjamas and a gold duvet) with a cup of cocoa and a book, falling asleep and dreaming about all things past - approx 1 minute spent for each year should work out nicely!! Long live Corrie!!! Well done all.

hhmm, could be a disaster, can't just see some of the characters singing, ie Betty, Ken and Diedre. Some have done quite well in other talent shows so I guess composer Trisha would have to be a bit selective. But would that be fair?.

Corrie has a very talented cast with the odd exception and I think they will really set other soaps an example if they can pull this off. Go on Corrie!!!
