A new report has revealed that on average TV viewers watched 43 ads a day during the first half of the year.
The figure is up 2% year-on-year and in total viewers in the UK watched a staggering 2.45bn ads each day, reports Media Guardian.
TV marketing body Thinkbox, who commissioned the study, said the rise in the number of viewers watching commercial TV was partly due to people staying in more because of the recession.
However, the increased viewing figures doesn't mean good news for broadcasters who have seen ad revenue fall 14% year-on-year. Advertising on TV is now much cheaper because there are now so many channels on cable and satellite.
A senior executive at a leading media buying agency told the site: "Increased commercial TV viewing actually acts to dilute TV ad revenue for broadcasters. Overall audience increases forces the price of the audience down so advertisers don't have to spend as much to get the same reach for their TV commercial. It is a paradox."
Are you surprised that the average viewer watches 43 ads a day? Does the ad break have you reaching for the remote control? Let us know...

I tend to watch BBC channels wherever possible and record commercial ones because the same ads are shown over and over again which I find extremely boring and unneccessary. I was watching a programme the other evening and the breaks occurred every ten minutes, this was not so in the 60's but I suppose everything reverts back to money. Yes I do reach for the remmote control!!

They're a waste of time, very irritating, made for morons, sound annoying, annoying actors, @#$% products, expensive products, unrealistic, misleading, profiteering, scheming, deceitful and worst of all - they exist. Still,.. give me commercials over a TV License ANY day.
Posted by: wildimagination2003 on Wed Aug 05 03:27PM | Report abuseI'm not surprised at all. Ad breaks are getting longer and longer sometimes up to 10 minutes per break. Also the number of breaks per show has gone up. I've seen programmes where you only get to see the credits before you have a break, in programmes such as CSI. I know they have a short intro but do think that the old days of a 3 minute break 15 minutes into a show was much better. I'm not expecting it to change though as broadcasting companies increase the amount of money they make on adverts and decrease the amount they have to pay to actually buy shows to put on their stations.

Posted by: arfurchance on Wed Aug 05 06:49PM | Report abusePeople watch more TV ads because there are mre TV ads on TV than ever before. On cable channels TV ads are on every 10 minutes. Surf the channels anytime and i bet most of the channels will be showing an advert.

Posted by: x9xdeadx on Wed Aug 05 06:51PM | Report abuseI tend to record things I want to watch so I can zap through the adverts. I also tend to have my laptop at my side and when the adverts come on do something else. Don't they understand that if you are bombarded with adverts people switch off.
Posted by: rickrowett on Wed Aug 05 06:51PM | Report abuseI record a lot of programmes I want to watch during the day. When it comes to watchign I can then fast forward through the adverts. Nothing makes me happier than being able to do so. Adverts are for the simple minded. They're annoying, worthless and made by scheming, greedy morons. I do not ever buy something because I see it on T.V. Even so, as someone else said, I'd take adverts over a license any day. At least we're able to record and fast forward through this tripe.
