A judge has condemned The Jeremy Kyle Show for exploiting 'foolish and gullible' people for entertainment.
His comments came as he jailed Jamie Juste after he left his girlfriend with serious facial injuries after a bust-up following the pair's appearance on the ITV1 show.
Rebecca Langley appeared alongside her 26-year-old boyfriend Juste on an episode called 'Can lie detector tests save our family?' to discuss allegations that she had been unfaithful during a break in their relationship.
When the couple watched the show together two weeks later it caused a violent row in which Juste attacked Langley, leaving her with a severely swollen eye, a suspected broken nose and serious bruising to her face and body.
Sentencing Juste for two years, Judge Sean Enright said: "It would have been higher still but for the involvement of the television show, which seems to have fed your insecurities.
"I have not seen this show but there is plainly an element of cruelty and exploitation. They must have suffered considerable mortification and embarassment."
ITV spokesperson, Grant Cunningham, said: "With respect to the judge, we are surprised at his remarks given that he pointed out that he has not seen our programme and we absolutely refute the notion that it involves cruelty and exploitation.
"The programme provides an opportunity for people to resolve pre-existing disputes and personal issues on neutral territory, with the offer of counselling, mediation and support, which is on-going following their appearances.
"There have been numerous positive outcomes from this, including parties who have resolved complex and long-standing personal problems."
This is not the first time that a judge has spoken out against the show. In 2007, District Judge Alan Berg described is as 'a form of human bear baiting' at a hearing for an assault sparked by the show.
Do you agree that the show is a form of exploitation? Should it be taken off our screens? Let us know what you think...

Yes I think this show is a form of explotation for the sake of cheap entertainment they find gullible people with problems who are looking for answers though I cannot understand why the do it so publically I have seen this show and got no pleasure or answers to possible problems that other members of the public may have as far as i am concerned it is cheap entertainment at the expence of others some of whom may be desparate for answers. You would have to be pretty desperate to appear on this show.

Posted by: sherreebusby007 on Fri Jul 24 12:32PM | Report abuseI have seen a few of the shows and believe that the couples who appear on the show are already at a very low ebb in their lifes, on appearing it drags any problems that they have further down the slippery slope to disaster. We do have fully trained people in all ares to deal with there problems no matter what they are. I f these people need help as they say they do they can contact the correct people and get help locally and privately there is no need to air them on television. They are only making matters worse by doing this. I think most of them just like to appear on tv regardless of the turmoil in their lifes, these shows should be taken off air.
Posted by: andrew.ingham1951 on Fri Jul 24 12:32PM | Report abuseI agree that the show is exploiting people. People hungry for their little piece of fame go on this show and make complete fools of themselves, not thinking of the consequences. Re your article about the man who assaulted his partner.
Posted by: tamboag on Fri Jul 24 12:33PM | Report abuseIt is exploitation, however, it highlights the fact that our society is full of useless retards. Generations of them. They aren't intelligent enough to realise they're being exploited. The Jeremy Kyle show is their claim to fame. I just hope the human race evolves over the next million years to somehow stop some of these idiots from producing children left right and centre.

Posted by: tina.tait on Fri Jul 24 12:33PM | Report abuseWhat the hell is going on!!! Jeremy Kyle is the only one who has enough back bone to say what should be said to his guests! The fact that the guy hit is partner is due to the fact that he is a thug and not Jeremy trying to help them! Maybe the Judge should try to watch the program and see what is actually said and what goes on.
Posted by: emma.newton on Fri Jul 24 12:33PM | Report abuseNo, I don't think the show is exploitative or that it should be taken off our screens. People aren't forced to appear on it. Jeremy Kyle is frank and fair, not cruel.
