BBC axes Robin Hood

The BBC has axed Saturday night drama Robin Hood after ratings fell to just 1.7 million.

The show once attracted audiences of up to eight million viewers, however, ratings for the current series have been much lower and the final episode was shunted to BBC Two to make way for Wimbledon coverage.

The shocking last episode of series three saw Robin killed off, along with several of the other main characters, so it is perhaps no surprise that the series will not be returning.

Greg Brenman, head of drama at Tiger Aspect (who produced the show), said: "We have been immensely proud to be the most recent custodians of the Robin Hood legend. From the outset it was our ambition to find an exciting and modern way of interpreting our version of the hero and his legendary life. We are sad to be saying goodbye to this much-loved project."

The decision to axe Robin Hood comes just weeks after ITV axed its Saturday night family drama Primeval. Earlier this year it was revealed that ITV's Demons would also not be returning after just one series.

There had been a revival of Saturday night tea-time drama since the successful relaunch of Doctor Who in 2005, however, the axing of these three dramas would appear to signal a return to entertainment and reality shows, which are much cheaper to produce.

J.H.C !!!! this is getting nuts! so much twoddle on the telly now, robin hood, primeval and demons were the only things worth watching on saturday nights, agree with losing the soaps though. LOL but its world gone mad, remember the days of early morning kidstv, and a half decent programme in the evening i.e. A-Team, etc.... reality shows suck a*s*biscuits

none of these should have been axed...do the people at the top have any idea what the viewing public think?

Let's keep our fingers crossed for Merlin and Dr. Who - unless they're planning on Strictly Come Dancing running for a whole year, that's pretty much it as far as our Saturday night is concerned.

I was very sorry to see the last of the recent Robin Hood series...I thought it the best interpretation ever with excellent casting...all characters were very good I cannot understand the low viewing figures....perhaps the timing ????? So..many thanks for a very worthwhile series....great fun and enjoyment...pity to hear that it has been axed....I was hoping that the `gang` would carry on. It is certainly much more satisfactory (and intelligent) viewing than any of the celebrity programmes

Lets have a look at TV for a second. Even going by this site the most talked about shows are Britain's Got Talent, The Apprentice, Big Brother, The X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing. See the links below. That doesn't mean they are any good. The TV networks are just cutting shows on ratings like they do in America. This leads to good shows running for a few episodes and being cut. The thing about American TV being that when the networks sell the shows abroad or in DVD format they get paid again and this leads to shows being brought back such as Staegate which was cancelled loads of times. The BBC are paid by us to make programs not be advertisers so rating should not matter. I don't want a load of reality shows on the BBC. BBC2 used to have a comedy hour at 9pm bring that back !!!!! BBC2 is dead as there hasn't been anything on it for years. BBC3 has some really good shows (Torchwood, Being Human and comedy) but the network want to move them to BBC1. Problem being they mess around with their schedule to fit BBC1 because of sport and Eastenders. They're going to kill Drama to buy sport because some executive doesn't like the shows. WATCH AND SEE.
